Our Why: “Shooting For A Cure,” a Million Shot Challenge, is designed to combine fun off-season training with raising money and awareness for oncology research as we continue building on our commitment to community service and cancer research fundraising.

The Challenge: The challenge is simple, we challenge every older player to shoot 100 pucks a day for at least 50 days, reaching a minimum of 5,000 shots, while our younger players are challenged to shoot 50 pucks a day for at least 50 days, totaling at least 2,500 shots.

The Rules: Players can shoot anywhere and with whatever they need to use in order to participate and reach their goals. Whether it’s in the driveway, garage, basement, tennis court, or anywhere else, all shots count. Players can use pucks, rubber pucks, street hockey balls, or anything else that gives them the ability to take part in the challenge. We will be on the honor system, and we expect our kids and families to be accurate in their reporting.

Fundraising Efforts: We challenge players to reach out to family, friends, neighbors, and everyone in between to support the initiative by pledging donations tied to the player reaching their shot goal. Beyond helping raise money, this is meant to teach young athletes the importance of setting a goal, committing to it, and holding themselves accountable through consistent time, effort, and discipline.

Organizational Commitment: We challenge each organization to set a collective organization shot goal tied to a fundraising commitment. For Longwood Hockey, we pledge one penny per shot for every one of our players participating in the challenge. If our player shoots 5,000 shots, we will donate $50 toward their fundraising efforts and, if they shoot more, we will donate more. In addition, we will donate an extra $10,000 if the collective total within Longwood Hockey surpasses One Million Shots.

The Cause: 100% of the money raised in Shooting For A Cure will be donated to the Maurice Campbell II Initiative at MSK.  Mo was a 2003 birth year hockey player within the North Jersey Avalanche Organization and a young man of unbelievable skill, power, courage, and character who was diagnosed with a rare cancer in Stage 4 called DSRCT. Mo inspired the entire Northeast hockey community with his courageous battle over the subsequent four and a half years.  His story, and the incredible work of MSK, can be found at https://mosmilefoundation.org/.
