Dr. Diaz is a physician-scientist who specializes in the care of people with colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, bile duct cancer, and neuroendocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. His research focuses on how to apply cancer genetics to screen for, detect, diagnose, and monitor cancer by looking at DNA in tumor tissue and by using liquid biopsies.
Pioneering research led by Dr. Diaz resulted in a breakthrough study published in 2022 in which 100% of all patients who completed a clinical trial for a new rectal cancer immunotherapy achieved full remission without radiation, surgery, or chemotherapy. He is currently working to develop what he calls a “molecular Pap smear” that can diagnose early-stage ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer. Dr. Diaz has received three American Association for Cancer Research Team Science Awards for his contributions to advances in pancreatic cancer sequencing, the treatment of malignant brain tumors, and liquid biopsy. He received his MD from the University of Michigan.
